Mark your calendars – 11 June 2025.

The International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) and OculloSpace are set to formalize a visionary collaboration through the signing of a Letter of Intent (LOI) – a milestone that marks the official launch of the Apprentice Track: From Internship to Space Mission initiative.

This program is more than just an academic-industrial partnership – it’s a launchpad for Malaysia’s future space innovators. Designed for high-performing IIUM students, this initiative offers a complete journey from classroom to cosmos, culminating in active involvement with the Decimal-Sat1 satellite mission, scheduled to launch in Q1 2026.

The Apprentice Track
Through a selective internship and mentoring process, students will gain hands-on experience in building, testing, and managing satellite components – guided directly by engineers and experts at OculloSpace. Those selected will progress into project-based engagement during their Final Year Projects, leading to post-mission Career pathways.

“This mission is not just an opportunity – it’s a transformation. Students will get to be part of the real satellite development cycle, from early-stage R&D to launch readiness,” shares Assoc. Prof. Ir. Dr. Muhammad Hanafi Azami, the passionate force behind this collaboration.

This initiative has garnered the full support of IIUM leadership, particularly Assoc. Prof. Dr. Khairul Azami Sidek, Dean of the Kulliyyah of Engineering. His endorsement reflects IIUM’s strong commitment to experiential learning and the university’s growing role in Malaysia’s space ecosystem.

Decimal-Sat1 at a Glance:

  • 1P PocketQube nanosatellite
  • UHF Band communication
  • ADCS: Passive attitude control system
  • Primary Mission: To send DNA-encoded personal messages into space
  • Secondary Mission-1: Test performance of solar sensors in orbit
  • Secondary Mission-2: Serves as a digipeater for amateur radio communication

This collaboration also highlights the growing role of academicians and researchers, whose insights and involvement will indirectly but significantly contribute to the success of Decimal-Sat1 and future missions.

Building on the momentum of a successful LOI exchange between OculloSpace and IIUM during LIMA 2025 in Langkawi, this latest LOI with IIUM strengthens the foundation for an accelerated path toward launch – with urgency driven by the Q1 2026 timeline.

Join us as we celebrate this bold leap forward for students, educators, and space technology in Malaysia. The countdown has begun – and the orbit awaits.
